The Hedonic Treadmill
Okay, Dave Mable and I talked last night on his podcast, Bike Talk with Dave, and an aside question he asked was, "where is your next adventure". I asked, "have you ever felt like you're on the hedonic treadmill when trying to seek the next greatest ride ever?" He gave me a great answer: "dude aren't we all always looking for the next great ride?"
But in the meantime.......Iceland, that was great. I know the routes and turns by heart, and that is a really fun thing. I always say I can ride across Iowa on gravel without a map or gps. I can do the same in Iceland. Getting to know a place is like learning to use tools to make something cool.
What I would be able to do now, with experience:
Land in Iceland and simply start riding.
Know how to cross glacial streams (I've crossed over 100) with insight.
Know what to do in hurricane force winds that last hours.
Love the cold and rain.
