Introducing Handmade Bikes

We dropped off the welder, tube bender, tube notcher, steel and frame jig at the UCSB bike shop.

The idea is to introduce the handmade bike curriculum while building a frame with students.

Big thanks to Andy Long for traveling with me and helping. I could not have made this trip without him.

The facility is funded through student fees. Faculty, students and people in the community pay a $5.00 fee to have their bike worked on, along with any cost of parts. Students make up the staff.

UCSB plans to add a bike curriculum connected to art and engineering. I’m here to demonstrate the learning that can happen with a handmade bike curriculum, as well as explain the the pieces of such an operation.
