Gold!
Yesterday’s bicycle frame building workshop session at the University of California Santa Barbara went well.
Critically, Channing Hammond, engineer and the Creator of Old Man Mountain, had a head of a lathe that I could mount to my Baileigh tube notcher to be able to miter the 4130 steel tubes. The chances of finding this solution on such short notice is like those of winning power ball, and fare less than being struck by lightning. We went into his shop and he was using a setup much like I have at school. He was only 7 minutes from campus.
I returned, mounted it up, and then did a test cut. Gold!
We got through the main triangle. By the time we got to mitering the top tube/seat tube, I turned mitering over to students.
Adam Jahnke and I. He’s my host and the creator of the 5.2 million dollar bike studio, that’s taken 5 years to come to fruition.
So, I’m headed to the beach to run and ride and scratch my head about this afternoon’s session. Surf’s up, dudettes and dudes.
